Mauro Giuliani – Op. 46 – Choix de mes fleurs chéries

Mauro Giuliani’s Opus 46, titled Choix de mes fleurs chéries, ou Le Bouquet Emblématique (“Choice of my beloved flowers, or The Emblematic Bouquet”), is a collection of ten character studies for solo classical guitar. Composed during his highly successful years in Vienna, these charming pieces perfectly embody the elegant musical aesthetic of the Biedermeier era.

The collection is dedicated to Monsieur Jules Giraud. Each of the ten individual pieces lyrically depicts a different flower, utilizing the guitar’s diverse tonal colors to evoke their unique characteristics and symbolic meanings:

  1. Le Myrte (The Myrtle) – Representing love and immortality, written as an expressive Andantino.
  2. La Pensée (The Pansy / Thought) – A delicate piece symbolizing remembrance and reflection.
  3. Le Lis (The Lily) – Capturing purity and majesty through graceful melodic lines.
  4. Le Jasmin (The Jasmine) – Elegantly conveying amiability and sweet fragrance.
  5. Le Romarin (The Rosemary) – A nostalgic study depicting fidelity and remembrance.
  6. L’Œillet (The Carnation) – A lively movement showcasing fascination and distinct charm.
  7. Le Narcisse (The Daffodil) – Reflecting self-esteem, beauty, and renewal.
  8. La Violette (The Violet) – A modest and tender piece representing modesty and faithfulness.
  9. La Rose (The Rose) – The most famous piece of the set, celebrating love, passion, and timeless beauty.
  10. Le Laurier (The Laurel) – A grand finale symbolizing victory, glory, and artistic achievement.

While these miniatures are accessible to intermediate guitarists, they are highly demanding regarding tonal control, delicate phrasing, and expressive interpretation. Together, they form a musical “bouquet” that serves as a prime example of early 19th-century salon music.
