Bernardino Balletti was an Italian lutenist and composer of the Renaissance. Only a small amount of reliable information about his life has survived. Historical sources indicate that he came from the region of Piacenza in northern Italy and was active there during the mid-sixteenth century. He is primarily known through his lute music and the publication of his Intabolatura de Lauto, Libro Primo in 1554.

The Lute as the Center of His Work
Bernardino Balletti devoted nearly all of his musical career to the lute. His compositions demonstrate how instrumental music evolved during the sixteenth century from merely accompanying vocal music into an independent artistic genre.
Intabolatura de Lauto, Libro Primo
In 1554, Bernardino Balletti published his most significant work, Intabolatura de Lauto, Libro Primo, in Venice. The collection was dedicated to Count Honorio Scotto of Piacenza and printed by Antonio Gardano, one of the leading music publishers of the Renaissance.
The volume contains numerous compositions for solo lute, including:
- fantasies,
- ricercars,
- pavanes,
- saltarelli,
- morescas,
- and variations on well-known dance melodies.
Among the best-known pieces are La Moretta, Represe, La Favorita, Toccata, and several Padoane, which continue to be performed today by specialists in early lute music.
