Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687–1750) was a prominent German Baroque composer and lutenist. Born in Grottkau near Breslau to lutenist Johann Jacob Weiss, he served in distinguished positions, including service to Prince Alexander Sobieski in Rome and later as a key court musician in Dresden. Weiss became one of the most important and prolific composers of lute music in history, creating over 600 pieces primarily organized into multi-movement suites and partitas. Recognized as one of the most technically accomplished virtuosos of his day, he was famous for his improvisational mastery and complex contrapuntal writing. In later life, Weiss befriended Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, through whom he met J.S. Bach; historical accounts record that Bach and Weiss engaged in legendary, friendly competitions of musical improvisation, with Bach on the harpsichord and Weiss on the lute.
